A talk by Alan Cooper
Montague Burton was one of the first retailers to create a strong brand image through its buildings and many served a social purpose as well. Alan will explore the history and architecture of Burton's shops developed by architect Harry Wilson (from early 1920s) and then Nathaniel Martin (from1937). Burton's young children often cut the ribbon to open the shops and you can still see their names on the foundation stones.
