Seaton & Beer Quarry Cave

Seaton Labarynth

A party from the WestWiltsu3a visited the little seaside town of Seaton which faces onto Lyme Bay. It was dull when we left but the sun did come out. There is a mile long Esplanade & seafront, with coffee shops and cafés. A stroll up from the seafront will bring you to Cliff Fields Gardens and to the Labyrinth, constructed to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the town.

After lunch either picnic or in a café, we left Seaton for the short journey to the Beer Quarry Caves. We had a very informative tour lasting 1.5hours. We were shown the different time lines in the stone and learned about how the stone was cut and something about the lives and conditions of the workers. Beer Quarries was started by the Romans. It provided stone for 24 cathedrals, including Westminster Abbey.
