Sculpture by the Lakes is set in 26 acres along the River Frome with lakes and meandering paths and occasional seats to enjoy the views and was the destination of West Wilts u3a coach trip in September.
After several days of heavy rain, the day was beautiful – dry and sunny, just the right temperature for a walk in the country.
Somehow, seeing sculpture in the outdoors enabled us to appreciate each sculpture individually and without the confines of a studio or gallery.
There are 131 sculptures here according to the guide, from small to really large that can only appreciated outside.
'The rising of Icarus' towered above us all while those of birds were as actual size.
There were sculptures in the lake itself. 'Time to Reflect' was a sculpture of letters in reverse, set in the water to create the message correctly in the water. Another was of a head set in bushes in the centre of the lake – Leaf Spirit.
It was a free afternoon, we all wandered in couples and singles enjoying the peace and lovely surroundings and appreciating the skill of sculptors. Yet we still met companions from the coach as we walked and shared positive views of what we had seen.
Altogether an extremely pleasant afternoon to wander and relax.
